How to split gas money for a road trip

The fairest way to split gas is by total fuel used, not by miles each person sat in the car. Calculate total gallons burned, multiply by the average price you paid at the pump, then divide by the number of people sharing the ride. If the driver covered wear and tear or tolls, add a small flat amount on top.

When to use this calculator

Group road trips, festival drives, ski trips, friends carpooling to a wedding, or regular commute carpools. It also works for rideshare drivers who want to know fuel cost per passenger.

All numbers are estimates. Actual fuel use depends on driving style, terrain and weather.

Frequently asked questions

How does the gas cost split calculator work?

Gallons = distance ÷ MPG, total fuel cost = gallons × price per gallon, and cost per person = total cost ÷ number of people. It's the standard way ride-share groups split gas.

Should I include tolls and food?

This calculator covers fuel only. Add tolls, parking and food separately, or use the full trip cost calculator if you want a per-person total for the whole trip.

What gas price should I use?

Use the current US average (about $3.45/gal for regular) or a typical price along your route. Check AAA or GasBuddy for live state averages.

Does it work for round trips?

Yes — just enter the total round-trip mileage as your distance.
